Additional cover for renting a car overseas

If you rent a car for driving overseas, you may be required to pay up an additional $20 a day for the additional third party cover (over and above the basic cover provided in the basic rental). This is quite high.

If you are insured with NTUC Income and have NCD of 20% or more, you can get this additional cover at a 50% discount from us. You can save $10 per day.

Call 6332 3456. More details can be found in our website.

This is a very useful and economical service. I just came back from a 3-week trip around the USA. I booked my car rentals online and bought this option with Income before I departed for the periods of rental.

The insurance option saved me money and gave me peace of mind as I could decline the exorbitant insurance option offered by the car rental company.

In the first case, at Enterprise Rental Car in Las Vegas, everything was so super friendly till I said I wanted to decline their insurance priced at US$19 per day. The CSR insisted for proof that I had alternative cover from an American insurer. I was so fed-up I told them I will go to another company even though I was already at their car collection centre. She explained that she was not pushing insurance but helping me avoid hassle in case I was stopped by the Highway Patrol and asked to show my insurance certificate. Basically, she explained that the rental is for a "naked" car without insurace cover of any kind.

As my wife was very tired, I talked to the supervisor and he agreed to let me take the car without their insurance on my assurance that I would not blame them if I was stopped from driving the car by the Highway Police.

The next segment was in Orlando, Florida. Here Hertz also wanted to charge US$19 per day for insurance. In this case Hertz did not make any fuss when I chose to decline their insurance.

I would recommend this innovative option to anyone who intends to drive overseas.
